View Full Version : What makes you like the 80's so much
For Me Generaly it was a great era lots of action and world events great music wierd trends and althought there where in groups you could still sort da your own thing not like in the 90's where you had to wear this and that and act American..........Im from Australia and when the 90's came everybody tryed to speak with an american acsent and be American. So what make the 80's special to you.
Hi Ism! It's got to be the music of the 80s. It just sets the stage for the fashion and attitude of the 80s. It's interesting that Australians wanted to have an American accent back in the 90s.

Good topic! First of all..I was born in 1962..so in 1983, I was able to go into the clubs..get served...etc.
The 80's were full of great music..I loved the trends (Ms. Pacman..etc..)..the clothes...
We used to be able to sit out at the shopping center on a sat night..the cops all knew where we were..it was cool. No trouble...hardly.
Times were safer. The girls and I could hook up with some guys..total strangers...and go out to the country to just have a few beers and talk..that's all it was..just talking! No pressure for sex...whatever.
The 80's had many great events and there are no words to describe what a great time they were!
There were tears, laughter, sadness, etc....
TV---awesome! CHEERS..COSBY..FAMILY TIES..LOVE BOAT..DALLAS...FANTASY ISLAND...MIAMI VICE...ETC..
What did I love about the 80's??? Just about everything up until about 1988....

The drummachines and early digital synthesizers!! :p
Artists had no clue of how to use those in a creative way in the beginning...so they just used them all at once adding layers and layers of on top of each other! Gotta luv that!! :) :p

I would say the music for starters. Music after the 80s has been horrible! I used to copy down the Top 40 EVERY weekend for years (1984-87). Now, I could not tell you one song on the pop charts. Music was diversified back then. Like I have said before, check out the album charts today, everything is the same: Brittany Spears style girls (and boys), thug rap, and alternative bands--that is basically it! Then check out an album chart from the 80s: Lionel Richie, Journey, Van Halen, Run DMC, A Flock of Seagulls, etc. The music was not captured in a box.
I loved the sports during that era. Magic Johnson, Joe Montana, Larry Bird, etc. There were superstars, but they cared about the team and its fans. Now, its all about "me" and the money. I am more and more hating the NBA where one player can control an entire franchise (ala Kobe or Allen Iverson).
On TV you had a variety of shows to watch that relied on writing and creativity. Now its shock value and "reality" TV where nothing is real.
Back in the day, I felt safer as well. I enjoyed going out to places to meet people. I love this site and the people I have met here, but the relationships are limited. Now, people meet online and get married three days later without having met one another!! Have you ever thot about how impersonal a society we are now? I use e-mail, but I STILL write letters by hand to friends and family. I couldn't tell you the last time I got a letter! Not even from mom!

remember when there was such a thing as a band. Shoot the music world doesn't even know what that word means now!!! Now days it's just about the lead singer - who can't even sing!!!

David hit the nail on the head...music today all sounds the same. In the 80s I could pick the title & artist w/in the first few beats. Actually it was a drinking game...We scanned the radio stations & the first one who named title & artist passed a drink to someone else. Funny late 80s story. We were playing one nite in college & I called it "ROCK in the USA...Romantics" & Everyone said "Drink for being an ***hole" No one remembered the group but the title was "That's What I Like About You." Guess that was the start of music sounding the same :)
Also...when was the last time you got a thank you note? I always write them & get annoyed that they just don't happen anymore.

It was the last years of Doctor Who- one of the best pieces of liberal thinking TV for young people.
80's TV also gave us much more cool and politically radical stuff like "The Young Ones", "Miami Vice", "Boys From the Blackstuff", "Red Dwarf", "Monkey", "Star Trek Next Generation" and the superb pilot episode of "Quantum Leap"
Even pop musicians back then had a respect for the art of melody and timing.
The 80's music scene gave us Martika, Prince, Duran Duran, Human League, Grandmaster Flash........... in-fact there's hardly ANY 80's musicians I wouldn't listen to, there's plenty of modern musicians i wouldn't give my ear to ever.
Although I'm hardly the biggest 80's film fanatic, the 80's did produce some of my favourite films- "Star Trek IV- The Voyage Home", "Blade Runner", "Once Upon a Time in America", "La Femme Nikita", "Escape From New York", "Back To The Future", "Terminator", "The Lady in White", "Tron", "Heathers", "Beverly Hills Cop II", "The Hitcher", "The Vanishing", "By Dawn's Early Light".
The 80's also produced some pretty fine books that were ahead of their time- "The Hunt For Red October", "The Wasp Factory", "Patriot Games", "Neuromancer", "Red Dwarf- Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers", "The Young Ones- Bachelor Boys" and "Red Dragon".
monkey magic owowow I remember that

the 80's were so much friendlier and free. Maybe the 70's led the way for being yourself, but the 80's sound/style was more individualised and creative. I have to agree with David's opinion of the 'shock-value' of tv today, as well, and the music. It does all sound the same. Most of the artists from the 80's had their own style, sound, outlook, etc. Almost timeless, IMHO.
And we didn't have as many terrorists! :yuck:
I liked what you had to say about the 80s vilji. Yes, so much more creative.

I guess this is a good place for me to make my first post....
I love the music of the 80's!!! And the 80's was a huge part of my youth so I will forever be hooked on memories from that time, thanks to the music and now thanks to all the resurgence of trends, although I will say.. I'm rather disappointed that many of the old toys they are bringing back... are not lookin the same... saddens me...

For me, it definately was the music. There were so many different styles, a melting pot, of music. Especially in the early 80's with the birth of new wave, with such bands as Soft Cell, Human League, &The Clash just to name a few. Music of the 80's was in an evolutionary state, bringing a breath of 'fresh air' to diversify the music with so many different types of music. Today's music just doesn't have the same flair as the 80's did. It's tedious and predictable. The 80's definately was a safer, more laid back time. Life was simple, and more enjoyable.

I think the music definitely summed up why I loved the 80s. That, and just the overall attitude of that entire decade- maybe even the fashion, too. I actually just got the new Culture Club Greatest Hits thing and it's been in my CD player all week. I can't wait until I get the DVD that came out last week too.

Well of course the MUSIC and FASHION big time,
BUT...
I do not know if I would of *enjoyed* those two things 'as much' if I was not young, vibrant, on the edge of my life, in the years of awakening to who I was, carefree, naive... it is the innocence of youth that keeps my heart stuck in the 80s whirlwind... I hear a song or I dress a certain way (and YES, for anyone who knows me, they know I still dress 80s LOL) it all brings me back to a time when I was less serious... I actually do think about something or other from the 80s every single day, it is not just what I like or what I do... it's who I am. :D

A friend and I were talking about the 80's this past weekend. He asked me if I had seen any of the new 80's 3D on Vh1, which I have not. He just said, "What was it about the 80s?", and began remininscing about those great days...and as so many have stated, there were many variables that made the 80s great, and so many things we did NOT have to worry about that made it a great time as well. I would pretty much carbon copy the comments that have alredy been made about the time...so I suppose I have no point in this other than to say..."what was it about the 80s?" :thumbsup3
