"The Young Ones"
Does anyone remember watching this show on MTV late at night?

I never watched it when it was on MTV, because I didn't have MTV back then, but I became hooked to "The Young Ones" in the early 90s when a friend of mine showed me a couple episodes. I was so mad that I missed these when they originally aired. Luckily, they released a bunch of episodes on 4 video tapes.

My favorite episode is "Nasty" when The Damned were the musical guest. :)

"...has someone got a video????" *lol*

You just have to love the whole crew...Neal, Vivian, Rick....and that guy, Mike (right?? or was his name something else).

My sister was the first one to get me into The Young Ones. That was back in early '87. In October of '87, my hometown of Wellsville, NY got MTV, and I taped the show. Now does anybody remember British Comic Strip? That was from the people who did The Young Ones. One movie I remember that was part of this show was "Eat the Rich". It was about this transvestite waiter who opened up his own restaurant and they served the rich who trashed the poor. It had cameos from Jools Holland (who played a photographer, favorite quote from him, "Now smile with the gun."), Paul and Linda McCartney, Bill Wyman, Lemmy, and Bianca Jagger. This movie was so bad it was good. I think I still have it on one of my tapes.

I used to love watching The Young Ones, back in the day! It was hilarious! Too bad MTV doesn't show this classic Britcom anymore. Does anybody remember that song that Neil sang, "Hole In My Shoe"?

Rick: "Neil, is it REALLY necessary to have the light on when you take a bath?"
Neil: "Yes"
Rick: "What are you going to do? Photosynthesize?"

I love the Young Ones! My sister got me into the show in the early 90's. It's one of my favorite shows to quote. Bless the Brits.

Another favorite:

Neil: "Well, that's a rather difficult question, I mean, 'do we have a telly?' There are several possible answers to that"
TV Detector Man: "We know you've got a telly, we detected it."
Neil: "Oh, so you've just been playing with me all along."
TV Detector Man: "Well, it's better than playing with yourself! Ho, ho, ho, cheap sexual allusion, makes the world go round."

I like the one where the fellas go on that TV game show. The episode was called, Bambi.
Did you know:
In the Bambi episdoe, Emma Thompson was in the episode. She was one of the "snobs", which also included Ben Elton, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie.

One of my favorite episodes is when Neil gets a cold and they put a plastic bag over his head. He sneezes and sneezes, then at the end of the show they take the plastic bag off and all this snot comes out. It was gross and hilarious.

I just checked Amazon.com and they have the videos on sale for $13.99 each. They are going to make a great Christmas present for my sister in Chicago, she LOVED them too. We would do lines from the shows the next day, and annoy the hell out of my Dad.

Liz, could you please turn your caps off. In the internet community all caps means your shouting. Unless you need them on because you're visually impaired it just doesn't look good.
Sorry you don't like The Young Ones. I thought it was very funny. Hey, I have a very bad sense of humor.

Neil: "Open up, it's the pigs...open up, it's the pigs"
Dude whose name I can't remember off the top of my head: "Come on in, mate, take the tit off your 'ead."

BambiK7, thanks for telling me about the videos on Amazon.com, I told my sister and she's so happy. She's put them on her wish list. Yay! I think I might have to get them too, now that I have a VCR & TV.

I really loved that show. I was fortunate enough in the mid '90's to record all of the episodes off of Comedy Central when they aired them.

Madness appear in a few episodes too. I know they did, "House of fun" in one, and in the middle of the performance, everyone starts going nuts, running down the street and madness went right along with them.

Any know if they're releasing them on DVD or if they're already out on it?

Growing up in England, television was very limited. But I always watched The Young Ones. I found it so halarious!! I really enjoyed the dark humour of it all. On that note, did anyone see the second show that Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson did together? (circa 89-95?) It was called Bottom, and it was just as funny as The Young Ones. Alot of the style and humour that The Young Ones had went into this one as well. If you think they are funny, definately check out the movie Guest House Paradiso. They play there characters from Bottum, and its them running a horendous hotel!http://www.theunholytrinity.org/cracks_smileys/contrib/edoom/heads_or_tails.gif

I finally got to see an episode of this show at a friend's house. It was funny, though, I didn't think it was all that. Lot of stupid humor. The episode I watched had them at the laundromat fighting with the laundry machine and showed how nasty they let their clothes get, then there was something about switching personalities, then they were on some quiz show.

Bottom was their third one. I thought Filthy Rich was an absolute classic. Mayall's character was almost identical to his "Young One's" Character. Nigel Planer was also in that one.

I have a few episodes of Young Ones on TV. The odd episode was rather bizarre, but over all it was a classic show with some hilarious stuff in it.

Michael, I used to own Nigel Planer's "Neil's Heavy Concept Album". It had that "Hole in the shoe" song. It was quite an entertaining album.

I have all of the episodes on vid. This was and is one of my fav TV shows.... Rick Mayall was my favorite and I still quote from the show, much to the annoyance of my family and friends hehe.

Rick's poems? LOL

What do you think you're doing, pig?
Do you really give a fig, pig?
And what's your favourite sort of gig, pig?
Barry Manilow
Or the black and white minstrel show?

Oh, Cliff
Sometimes it must be difficult not to feel as if
You really are a Cliff
When fascists keep trying to push you over it
Are they the lemmings?
Or are you Cliff?
Or are you, Cliff?

Another sad fact is a bought a Young Ones t-shirt in the 80s....and I still have it!

:laughin:

Oh I LOVE The Young Ones!!!! I used to love Christopher Ryan as Mike, but then I switched to Rik Mayall. Rike is totally amazing, and very funny. My favorite quote from the show was when Vyvyan grabs Rik's record plaer in the Cash episode, and Rik says, "VYVYAN, YOU *******!!!!!"
If it wasn't for The Young Ones, I wouldn't have gotten into:

Jools Holland
French and Saunders
Lenny Henry
Motorhead

The Young ones aired over here in the early 80s and even though the show was pretty good, it's not on par with "Bottom".

Cast members Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson also did another show named "Filthy, Rich & Catflab" in the mid 80s. has anyone seen that show?

Oh Bottom is another great show. I have a tape of some of the episodes when they showed it on BBC America. The only problem I have with the show is that whenever I see Rik get hit in the head or have something happen to him I cringe. mybe it's because of what happened to him five years ago after his almost fatal accident. He was in a coma and had really bad head injuries.
I feel like I have a special bond with Rik, because I had a really bad accident almost the same time as his. I even sent him an e-mail at his website when I found out what happened. I'm glad he's gotten better. The last thing I saw of him was when he played Harad in a TV production of "Jesus Christ Superstar". He stole the show for me. :)

Filthy Rich & Catflap was a hilarious show and I am disappointed they only made one series (Just like The Young Ones). I can still remember fondly the episode when they were playing Trivial Pursuit and Rik Mayall's character was being a right royal prat! :laughin:

I remember that episode very well recker. But my favorite is the one where they go crazy in a super market smashing up everything in sight.

Thank God I managed to tape all these episodes when they aired them again over here a few years ago. It is a higly underrated series that not many people seem to remember.
