1969: Frank Zappa disbanded the Mothers of Invention. Zappa said he was "tired of playing for people who clap for all the wrong reasons."

1972: Grace Slick was sprayed with tear gas and Paul Kantner was slammed to the floor by police following a chaotic show by the Jefferson Airplane in Akron, Ohio.

1977: Elvis Presley was found dead at his Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tenn. Doctors first said he had died of congestive heart failure, but an investigation revealed drugs may have been a factor.

1985: Madonna married Sean Penn in a ceremony in Malibu, Calif. The couple later divorced.

1989: Kenneth Branagh married Emma Thompson in London. The couple later divorced.

1989: Stan Brakhage, one of the most influential filmmakers of America's avant-garde cinema, was named recipient of the prestigious Edward MacDowell Medal. It was the first time in 30 years the medal had been given to a filmmaker.

1992: Sting married longtime girlfriend Trudie Styler in a civil ceremony in London.

Man I will never forget that day as long as I live. My Brother and me were playing in the Living room -when the news came over the radio. My Mother just lost it!! Very Very sad day for the music world!!! :frown:
