Hey I didn't know if anyone has covered this topic before, but I would love to hear what was the first music video that was seen by most people. It was a big deal for me, mainly because I lived in a rural area and we only got about three channels, ABC,CBS,and NBC. So it was a while before I got to say I want my MTV. Anyway we had video shows called "Friday Night Videos" on NBC and after that was "Night Tracks" does anybody remember them? Anyway my first video watched was in February of 1983 and it was Michael Jacksons "Billie Jean".... Wow! I stayed up all night trying to moon walk after that....This is still an awesome video to watch. My favorite part is when Michael starts walking down the sidewalk and then with the beat the sidewalks starts to light up under his feet. This is sooooo cool!!! And it looks all spooky in the distance with the city in the background all deserted. Hey I'm just getting carried away. Anyway let me know when and where and what channel or show you saw your first music video.
Great topic David! Ahhhh... The great era of the REAL Mtv video! It's a toss-up as to which video I actually saw first. It's either Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - You Got Lucky or The Pretenders - Back On The Chain Gang. Neither of which are my favorite vids, but I distinctly remember these in the early days of Mtv. My parents couldn't pull me away from the tube while I was watching Mtv!

I, too, grew up in a rural area, and we didn't get cable at my house until '84. The first video that I remember seeing was Blondie's "Heart of Glass", back in 1980, on America's Top Ten Countdown, with Casey Kasem. I was but a wee lad then, but I remember being enthralled with the music and with Blondie twirling around in her little mini-dress!!! ;)

Hey Adam and Michael,
Those are great videos, whether it was Tom Petty or The Pretenders and also Blondie they all made their music statements with great pics on the tube. And by the way Michael thanks for reminding me of Casey Kasems American Top Ten Countdown I forgot about that video show. "Keep Your Feet On The Ground And Keep Reaching For The Stars"
I also watched Kasey's Top 10, Friday Night Videos, and Star Tracks, but I couldn't name the first video I ever saw. However, living in the city has it's advantages. I got to see the start up of MTV and the Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star. :D J.
I think it may have been Pat Benetar's "You Better Run". I'm not really sure.

I don't remember the first video I ever saw, just that it was on MTV. The ones to make the most impact on me were Loverboy's "Working for the Weekend" and Duran Duran's "Hungry Like the Wolf" (yummmmm)

The first music video I ever saw was: Start Me Up by the Rolling Stones. That was on an episode of Solid Gold. When I first got MTV in 1984, the first video I watched on there was Hold Me Now by the Thompson Twins.

Hmm, I really can't remember the first video I ever saw. I didn't get MTV in my hometown until October of '87, but I had Friday Night Videos, America's Top 10, Top 40 Videos and TV2000. I guess the very first music video I ever saw was, "Morning Train (0 to 5) by Sheena Easton. I think it was on America's Top 10.
The very first video I ever saw on MTV was "Games Without Frontiers" by Peter Gabriel.

I don't remember the first one I saw, but the first two that I remember were some stupid song about "2 triple cheese burgers and an order of fries" by who knows who and "Physical" by Olivia Newton John.

I just found out who that song was by. It's actually "2 triple cheese, side order of fries" and it's by Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen.
I downloaded the <a href="http://www.geocities.com/j88mph/cmdrcody.mp3" target="_blank">MPEG</a>to email to my sister. She's gonna flip.
Edited because I had the URL wrong. Sorry.

We just got cable TV, and I remember watching MTV 24/7. I remember Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know" being the first video I've seen.

Good question. I honestly have no idea but it was most likely Billy Idol or Duran Duran. I can't remember life without MTV and I didn't even have it when I grew up. My best friend and I would go to her grandmother's house and stay up all night watching it. It was heaven!

the earliest Music Video I remember seeing was Holly Johnson's "Love Train" back in 1989- I was 7 years old. I loved the video because like most little boys I was a big train lover back then.
He was on this tackily covered in yellow paint train riding on a cartoon background of clouds and fields, and then the train pulled off the track and actually took off into space and did a trip round the moon and came back.

Wow...great thread. The first video I remember was by Kix, can't remember the song though. But I also remember seeing Ahaa's- Take on Me. I saw these over at a friends house. Hell we still had a couple B/W sets in the house.

 First video I remember is about 1983 "Bloody Sunday" by U2. The one at Red Rocks and the girl grabs Bono's butt when he marches on the edge of the stage. I was wild about him. (then he got all humanitarian, political)

First video I ever saw was "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen!
Anyone remember Don Kirchner's Rock Concert?
It was on like mid or late '70s, Saturday nights at Midnight or after...

The first music video I can recall seeing was You're A (Strange Animal) by Canadian singer Gowan. Kind of a cheesy video, but nonetheless it was entertaining :thumb:

The very first video I saw was on MTV, back when MTV was Music Television.... Boy do I miss those days :( . Anyway the first video I ever saw was from The Pretenders, I think it's called ' You're Special ' ( so special, I've got to have some of your attention, now give it to me ) back in 82-83 ? Not exactly sure of the year, it was the year that cable tv came to my city :laughin:

I believe the first music videos I ever saw were on MTV - although it's been awhile and I may have forgotten, but I know one of the first two I ever saw was Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror" and the other was the Bangles "Walk Like an Egyptian." They aired during the day on Saturday, so I'm not sure what year or what show it was. I still remember those videos too :) Great topic!

I was PROHIBITED from watching MTV! My mom thought for sure it would corrupt me beyond repair. So the first time I ever got to see MTV was when our teenage neighbor Jenny babysat us, and she turned on MTV the moment my parents walked out the door. Madonna's "Material Girl" was playing. I desperately wanted a pink dress like the one in the video!!! Within about a year or so, my mom lifted the ban, and my favorite show, for about a minute and a half, was that Julie Brown show... 'member that one???

I did not have MTV, but I did watch Kasey Kasem's Top Ten on the weekends. The first video I remember is "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" by Culture Club. Soon after, a kid moved into the neighborhood who had cable (obviously the rich one in the neighborhood) and we were there every day after school. I remember from that time "You Got Lucky", "Video Killed The Radio Star", "Turning Japanese" "Young Turks"...okay, so you asked for the first one...

Here in Canada, we never had MTV. We had our own version called 'Much Music', but it did not premier until 1984. We also had a show called 'CBC Video Hits' that aired at like 4-5pm daily.
These days, apart from the odd show like 'Nick & Jessica' and 'The Ashlee Simpson Show', Much Music still plays videos, and nothing but, and have since branched off into cable channels 'Much More Music', 'Much Retro' and 'Much Loud'. All three play only videos and no annoying VJ's :laughin:
